In one case, our technicians were contacted by a Dubai based company after a serious accident with a MAN B&W 8L 27/38 auxiliary engine. Eight crankpins were checked and showed ovality between 0.16 mm and 0.99 mm with deep bearing line marks. Hardness tests and magnetic particle examination were also performed and the cold deflection of the crankshaft was within acceptable limits. There was no sign of cracking in the crankpins. Based on the inspection results our technicians had to grind all eight crankpins, removing the minimum amount of material to bring them within the necessary dimensions. The machining was done on-site with portable, light weight crankshaft grinding equipment and the crankshaft did not have to be removed from the engine.
