The Influence of Social Stigma on Seeking Help for Erectile Dysfunction in Riyadh Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common medical condition affecting men worldwide, including a significant number in Riyadh. Despite its prevalence and availability of effective treatments, many men delay or completely avoid seeking medical help. One of the most powerful barriers behind this behavior is social stigma. In Riyadh’s cultural context, where masculinity, privacy, and social perception are highly valued, stigma plays a major role in shaping how men respond to sexual health issues. Social stigma refers to negative attitudes, beliefs, and judgments associated with a condition—in this case, erectile dysfunction. In many Saudi communities, ED is not always viewed as a medical issue but is instead linked to shame, weakness, or loss of masculinity. This perception creates psychological pressure that discourages open discussion and pushes the problem into silence. Research in Saudi Arabia shows that stigma is one of the most frequently reported reasons men avoid seeking treatment for ED. Many patients prefer self-medication or ignoring symptoms rather than visiting a clinic.
